Walter Eugene Dobkins
Walter Eugene Dobkins, 78, was born April 11, 1937 in Steelville Missouri. Second son of Ted and Ann Dobkins. Walt passed away at Advanced Care Hospital of Billings, Montana on December 15, 2015 from heart failure.
Walt grew up between Steelville Missouri and Colorado. He enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 19, where he received an honorable discharge after four years of service. In the early 1960s Walt went to work for McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis Missouri, he worked in a spacecraft department working on frames and lube systems for both spacecraft’s Mercury and Gemini. During employment he met the seven astronauts with President John F. Kennedy.
On February 14, 1959 he married JoAnn Puckett in Leasburg, Missouri. Four children were brought into this union. He will fondly be remembered by his brothers, one sister, multiple nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his children Robert Dobkins and wife Karrie of Hudson, Sharon Schmit and husband Ray of Gillette, Charles Dobkins and wife Becky of Pinedale and Beverly Hannum and husband Scott of Rawlins.
In 1968, Walt and family moved to Wyoming settling in Hanna for 37 years working as heavy duty mechanic and welder at the local coal mines. In 2005 after retiring, Walt and JoAnn moved to Gillette to be closer to three of their four children and their growing families. Walt really enjoyed the time his grandchildren took out of their lives to help him. Walt never met a stranger, enjoyed "coffee'ing" around Gillette and meeting lots of good friends along the way. Walt loved hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was sure to fill his elk tag every year. He taught hunter safety classes in the town of Hanna for several years.
Family preceding Walt in death are his parents Ted and Ann, his older brother JL, his grandsons Michael Eckenrod and Logan Dobkins.
Interment will be held at a later date in Rawlins, Wyoming.
Family and friends are asked to join for Walt’s celebration of life on Saturday, June 11, 2016 11 AM to 2 PM at the Bratten shelter at Dalby Park(fishing lake). A small carry-in buffet and refreshments will be served.
