Beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Sylvia Cornwell, passed away on July 6, 2016, age 90, in Farmington, New Mexico. Sylvia was born June 18, 1926 to George and Maud Johnson Bannister in Nuneaton, Derbyshire, England. Sylvia worked during World War II in a celanese factory, making material for parachutes. Sylvia met Charles Cornwell when he was stationed in England and France; they were married June 22, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Derby, England. She and Charles moved to California and later to Rawlins, where they lived until they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Sylvia is survived by her sister Pat (Bernard) Brookes; sister-in-law, Suzanne Bannister; daughters, Cynthia Hodges (Mike) of Farmington, NM and Kathryn Bowen (Steve) of Littleover, Derby, England; son Gary Cornwell (Sheree) of Berthoud, CO; grandchildren Scot McGinness and Elizabeth McGinness Digicomo (Tony) of Farmington, NM; Heidi Lee (Gwyn) and Holly Lord (Richard) of Littleover, Derby, England; Stephanie Maxson of Vancouver, WA and Derek Maxson (Cheyenne) of Duncan, OK; and step grandchildren Edgar Rose, Ashley (Clay) Cunningham and Apryl Rose. She was blessed also with 7 great grandchildren: Steven McGinness, Scott and Brooke Lee, Amber and Jake Lord; Isaac and Eden Maxson.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her parents, and her brother, James.
A celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held October 1 in Cynthia’s garden where Sylvia spent many enjoyable hours. Her remains will be taken to her homeland in England and final resting place will be at Lea Rhododendron Garden in Matlock, Derbyshire, England.
Sylvia was an elegant and refined British woman and she added a touch of class wherever she went. She will be sorely missed.
