RAWLINS – A routine traffic stop conducted by the Rawlins Police Department on the 1,200 block E. Cedar Street over the weekend led to the discovery of approximately 300 pounds of marijuana, authorities say.
The seizure is estimated to hold a $1.2 million street value.
“We don’t see this amount very often,” said RPD Chief Troy Palmer on Thursday.
Around 7:40 p.m. Saturday, a U-Haul van was apprehended after being clocked on speed radar traveling eight miles over the 30-mile an hour speed limit, according to a Rawlins Police Department press release.
Upon apprehension, the arresting officer noticed that the driver, Jesse Wright (age and origin not reported), was acting nervously and was visibly shaking. After questioning, Wright couldn’t produce a rental agreement for the vehicle, while inconsistencies were found in his explanation of his departure and destination points.
Subsequently, the officer called for a K-9 unit to be dispatched to the scene. It was then, according to the release, that Wright admitted to having a “load of marijuana” in the vehicle.
Once on-scene, the canine signaled a positive indication of controlled substances being in the vehicle.
According to Palmer, Wright was very cooperative during the arrest.
Under Wyoming State Statute, being Wright possessed more than three grams of marijuana, he faces a felony violation.
According to the release, RPD detectives are working with the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigations to further the investigation process.
Palmer was asked how the department felt about the large bust
“They did their job, and they took off a large quantity,” he said.
This, however, didn’t lead Palmer to believe that drug trafficking will cease in the area, saying, “It’s probably more than we all know.”
