RAWLINS — Mother’s Day was not kind to Rawlins, as this year saw the tragic death of one the city’s finest.
Cody Scott and 4 passengers were driving on Ferris Crossing Road at 11:40 p.m. on Saturday when Scott lost control of the vehicle after cresting a hill.
The vehicle rolled multiple times, during which, both Scott and one of the passengers were ejected from the car.
The group was then rushed to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County, where Scott eventually succumbed to his injuries on Mother’s Day.
Scott planned to attend Casper College in order to eventual become a Physical Education teacher. Scott also wanted to continue his passion for racquet ball at Casper College, as his nearly decade-long love for the sport saw him crowned champion in the 29th Annual Racquet Ball Tournament hosted by the Rawlins Recreation Center in February.
From administrators to fellow students, Scott’s unwavering smile and positive outlook stood out as they remembered him.
“It’s ridiculous how much of an impact he made,” said Tyler Sheets at an end of the year banquet for Best Buddies, which began with a moment of reflection.
Despite the utter tragedy of a young life forever lost, Scott’s passing has united the community in grief. As of publication, more than $10,000 has been raised by local residents to assist the Scott family with funeral expenses and medical bills.
A charity raffle raised $2,300 on Saturday as a part of a free dinner hosted by Blackwater Septic Solutions, but upon hearing of Scott’s passing, they redirected their funds to his grieving family. Their owner, Jeremiah Garner, pledged a further $2,300 to help the family in this time. An additional $2,300 was pledged by Amy and Philip Canaday of Wreck-A-Mend Collision Center.
“The last thing they should have to worry about is the financial impact of losing their children,” said Amy Canaday.
A Facebook fundraiser for the family, began by local residents Chad and Amy Berg, has raised $7,527 of their $10,000 at time of publication.
A benefit account in Cody Scott’s name was also opened at Bank of Commerce by a private individual.
Scott lettered in tennis four years, and two years in soccer. Scott also was an active member of the Rawlins High School Band throughout his high school years. Scott won the award for outstanding net player in tennis as well as being selected for the Outlaw Spirit Award during his time in band.
Scott passed away only two weeks before his high school graduation. At time of publication, no plans to honor the late student have been confirmed.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol declined to comment on the crash due to staff absence.
Memorial Hospital of Carbon County was unable to comment on the condition of the other passengers.
