This time of year makes me think about World War II. In May we have V-E Day and Memorial Day. The anniversary of D-Day is in early June, as is my grandfather’s birthday (he was a WWII veteran). As we have been dealing with the Covid-19 virus this year, these days of remembrance seem to be going by almost unnoticed, which saddens me because of all of the crucibles these days demarcate.
Growing up I could not hear enough stories of my grandfather’s experiences during the war. He and his brothers received awards for valor and service. They then returned home to build their own versions of the American dream. It was a story of patriotism, service and victory for the nation as well as the family.
