RAWLINS — The Rawlins City Council voted to ratify a Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) letter of support during the meeting on Tuesday, March 5.
The letter’s intent is support for the Wyoming Winter Truck Parking Action Plan for fiscal year 2024.
“It’s a letter of support for them to get a grant to do a study, as to where these winter truck parking places need to be; how many of them and such like that to study the whole thing,” Rawlins Mayor Terry Weickum explained.
The proposed parking action plan’s purpose is to identify and examine any of the potential locations located on the National Freight Network that could be home to a truck-parking infrastructure.
This project’s aim is to “address the needs of both truck drivers and overburdened communities during highway closures.”
Additionally, the action plan will be used to produce a prioritized list that will include truck parking solutions meant to guide WYDOT, as well as state investments, in future capital construction projects.
“Wyoming’s highways are no exception to the national truck parking shortage and the rural, overburdened communities along popular freight routes acutely suffer from the negative ripple effects of the pervasive issue, especially during inclement weather,” the agenda states.
