ROCK SPRINGS -- Western Wyoming Community College (Western) hosted 198 students from 15 different schools in the college’s service area for the annual 2024 Southwest Regional Math Contest on Feb. 27, in the Rushmore Gym.
Students in grades sixth through 12th participated in the competition this year. The event is sponsored by TATA Chemicals and Western’s Mathematics Department. TATA Chemicals covered the costs associated with the event with a generous donation.
“Tata Chemicals is once again proud to sponsor and support the 2024 Southwest Region State Math Contest. This is a wonderful event and a great opportunity for students in southwest Wyoming to test their math skills.
"We want to thank Western Wyoming Community College for hosting this event. They do a wonderful job. We also would like to thank and recognize the teachers that work with and prepare the students for this opportunity,” stated David Young, program management officer at Tata Chemicals.
Schools in attendance included Davis Middle School, Eastside Elementary School, Evanston High School, Evanston Middle School, Farson-Eden School, Green River High School, Green River Middle School, Mountain View Middle School, Pilot Butte Elementary School, Pinedale High School, Pinedale Middle School, Rawlins High School, Rock Springs High School, Rock Springs Junior High School and Saratoga Middle/High School.
Evanston High School took the top scores for Team A (grades 11th and 12th) and Team B (grades ninth and 10th). Paul Baxter, from Evanston High School, took first individual place in Team A and won a one-year scholarship to Western.
Team C (eighth grade) and Team D (grades sixth and seventh) participants use the competition as an excellent exercise to hone their skills as they prepare to compete in the state-ranked A and B teams in the future.
“We are delighted to announce the successful conclusion of the 2024 Southwest Region State Math Contest. This year, we hosted one of the highest number of contestants from the Southwest Region in history at Western. This event brought together a diverse and talented group of students who showcased their exceptional mathematical skills, solving 40 individual and two group intricate problems and demonstrated a deep understanding of the subject.
"The collaborative efforts of participants, educators, and organizers have made this competition a resounding success, highlighting the importance of fostering mathematical excellence at the K-12 level. Western’s math department takes pride in providing a platform that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a passion for mathematics. Congratulations to all the participants for their outstanding achievements, and we look forward to continuing our commitment to nurturing the next generation of mathematical innovators,” said Lusi Stephens, associate professor of mathematics at Western.
Western professors and math contest co-Chairs Lusi Stephens, Dragan Skropanic, Paul Johnson and Kaylee Tuttle, led the event though it was a collaborative effort by many others who contributed their time to ensure this event ran smoothly.
